Superman #33

Writer: Peter J. Tomasi andPatrick GleasonArtist: Doug Mahnke

Before Reading:

Superman has been a very consistent title. While it doesn't hold the title for most consistent in the rebirth launch (that title goes to Batman) its issues that seem like filler before a larger story arc begins, are usually quite good. Prior to this new arc "Imperius Lex" we were treated to a very simple, but fun two issue arc with Lois and Deathstroke. One thing to know is that since the Rebirth launch Lex Luthor has become somehwhat heroic and evens dons "superman armor" complete with the chest emblem and all. With his history however, readers can expect this to either change or be a cover something more sinister brewing in Lex's brain. Oh and for the really uninitiated: Superman and Lois have a super son named Jon.

During Reading:

The book begins with a visit to Apokolips where a prophesy is being foretold about the one who will take over the throne of Darkseid. Darkseid is currently a murderous teenager in Rebirth. He started as a baby again after the earth shattering events of the "Darkseid War" in the New 52 which helped launch the DC rebirth initiative. A nice double page spread is followed showing the battle for the throne. Granny Goodness and her Furies are at it with Kalibak and his Parademons. Who deserves to rule Apokolips with Darkseid gone?

Meanwhile, on earth we are brought in on a robbery taking place in Metropolis. In a scene that may or may not have been inspired by Spiderman: Homecoming, there are some crooks in town known as the JLAR (Justice League of Armed Robbery) and are robbing some places in Metropolis wearing poor masks of the JL members. Lex Luthor arrives on the scene along with Superman. After these events Lex is alone and is captured to be taken away to Apokolips by characters from the beginning of the book known as The Prophet and Ardora. The prophet has seen a vision that Lex is supposed to be the new ruler of Apokolips. Lex communicates to Superman from afar and he, Lois, and Jon are all taken to Apokolips, thus ending the issue.

After Reading:

There is something slightly off about this issue. The story here sort of feels like it came out of nowhere. I did enjoy the scenes with Lex and Superman for the most part, but the whole issue felt very rushed. I have always enjoyed Doug Mahnke's art but even that here seems like it was a little rushed. The facial expressions, and smiles in particular leave more to be desired. The line work is a bit sloppy for what we are used to seeing from Mahnke.

That said, this wasn't a terrible story by any means. With how consistent this title has been it was a little surprising to see this story get off to a rougher start. However, the question of "Who will rule Apokolips?" is an interesting one and the reveal that Lex may be the destined new King is a bit intriguing.

6.5/10

Of course you're in trouble. You are a crook in Metropolis!
