Mister Miracle #1

Before/During reading:

Writer Tom King has been on the rise (from Sheriff of Babylon to Batman) lately. When he announced Mister Miracle as a 12 issue series dealing with the New Gods readers couldn't help but salivate that this book would do for Mister Miracle what the "Vision" series did for Marvel. That series gave readers a book that was captivating and wildly different than anything on the shelves, but somehow did not butcher who that character is at their core. The book opens with a very big reveal for the character and then the story seems to jump around quite a bit. Artist Mitch Gerards was King's partner for Sheriff of Babylon and he uses the 9 panel layout in this particular story. This layout does not work with all stories, but it fits quite well here. As the story jumps around to different points in time, we are left to kind of piece the puzzle together. Though the story itself is not really a puzzle, it just isn't told in a completely linear fashion. However there is a big story being told here in just this first issue.

After/Evaluation:

Mister Miracle is a very unique comic book. Most of us will admit that we have never thought about what it would truly be like growing up as a child of Darkseid or living on Apokolips. The creative team here does an incredible job telling us a story that we didn't even know we wanted to hear. As mentioned earlier, the classic 9 panel layout per page works well because there is a lot of story being told here. It is safe to say Mister Miracle is a "superhero" story (using that term lightly here) unlike most, if not any book on the shelf currently. It is not a capes and punches comic. This book is telling an interesting, devastating, and very important story. The only knock on this one would be that it is not new reader friendly. It does an admirable job bringing you up on who Mister Miracle is, but without some dated knowledge of the DC universe, readers may find themselves lost. However, if you do have some knowledge of the New Gods, Definitely pick this one up, you will be hooked from the first 2 pages.

9/10

I can't show much from this comic without spoiling it!
